About the Course

In this 9-week course, students will engage with various mathematical concepts and skills. One focus of the course is on ratios and rates, particularly in real-world contexts. Students will learn how to determine rates for ratios that involve quantities with different units, as well as how to calculate and interpret unit rates. Additionally, students will extend their understanding of fractions and numerical patterns to generate or complete tables displaying equivalent part-to-part ratios and part-to-part-to-whole ratios. These skills will enable students to solve mathematical and real-world problems related to ratios, rates, and unit rates.

Another topic covered in this course is the coordinate plane. Students will build upon their previous knowledge and learn how to plot rational number ordered pairs in all four quadrants and on both axes. They will also learn to identify the line of reflection when two ordered pairs have opposite x- or y-coordinates. This extension of understanding will enhance students' ability to work with coordinates and apply them in various contexts.

Furthermore, the course will introduce students to data representation and analysis. Students will learn how to create box plots and histograms to visually represent sets of numerical data within real-world contexts. They will then use these representations to determine key statistical measures such as the minimum, lower quartile, median, upper quartile, and maximum. Students will also learn to describe the spread and distribution of the data based on these measures. Additionally, the course will cover calculations and interpretations of mean, median, mode, and range within a given data set.
